‘Crystal - The Dragon of Light’

‘Crystal - The Dragon of Light’ is a fun, interactive, uplifting and truly magical story for all children. Furthermore, the story is a perfect teaching resource for groups of children between the ages 5 - 11. Ava would love to share her story with the world (Yay!) and raise funds towards Autism New Zealand. Ava is a true example that if you believe in yourself, use your special gifts and talents, and through dedication and perseverance you can achieve anything!

Crystal - The Dragon of Light was created during the midst of our COVID-19 pandemic here in Aotearoa/New Zealand. We are all living in unprecedented times right now, our World is changing... At this particular time all our children were experiencing a mixed bag of uncertainty, stress, anxiety, frustration, confusion, and most are finding this time challenging especially being at home during isolation and lockdown.

Ava wanted to use the analogy of the ‘darkness creeping in’ as a powerful metaphor for the virus, Covid-19. Crystal the Dragon, her job of bringing in the light to eradicate the ‘darkness’…

Ava Morris – “Having Autism is my superpower!”

Ava is 9 now years old and lives with her Mummy, Daddy, 6 year old sister called Macy and beloved cat Phoenix! She attends Maungaraki School in Lower Hutt in Wellington and enjoys everyday school life. Ava enjoys walking to and from school with her Mummy and Macy especially when the sun is shining! Ava really loves animals, especially wolves, cats and dragons – of course!

Ava was diagnosed with Autism when she was 5. During this time, she was struggling with various changes in her life, starting school and most of all processing and understanding her diagnosis.

Since then Ava has been learning all about the many aspects of ‘Mindfulness’ whilst attending Kaleidoscope Solutions empowering weekly classes. Ava also took part in a 1:1 Learning and Mentoring programme with Kaleidoscope in March 2020 as she was experiencing some challenges and was unsure how to communicate her feelings and navigate through at this time. As we moved into lockdown during Covid-19, Ava worked through the sessions on-line through Zoom. Ava worked on creating a magical story alongside Heather as part of a ‘Children’s Story-Therapy Programme’. This is how Ava’s story ‘Crystal – The Dragon of Light’ was born!

Ava LOVED creating her story! Ava has the most incredible imagination and was able to use this to its full potential. Furthermore, Ava created her own illustrations alongside Macy and her Mummy!
